Winter is really here!

snowy forestIt's hard to believe it's only the middle of November, and the snow is here to stay!

At the beginning of this month, we were wearing t-shirts and sandals, with the temperature hovering around 20C! Granted, that is unusual for this time of year, but it only emphasized the extreme in temperatures we in northern Ontario can experience in a very short time.

The snow is absolutely beautiful - it lies soft and fluffy on everything, outlining the bare branches on the deciduous trees, and creating pyramids of the evergreen trees.

40 Bay Street Bed & Breakfast is open year-round to allow us to share the beauty of the area with our guests! Any time you would like to check out our current weather, you can always check out the town's web cam

A Winter Wonderland

waterfall in snowNo matter how cold it gets, waterfalls like this never tend to freeze over - the speed of the moving water doesn't let the ice form. However, the spray tends to collect along the sides and not only freezes, but builds up over time, to make a beautiful crystal ball that sparkles in the sunshine.

A surprise snowfall

boat in snowThis type of boat is known as a "run-about barge" - it is one of the last boats to come out of the water, and one of the first to be put it. It is made out of metal, and the front is specially shaped to be able to beach easily, and to be able to move amongst the ice pieces floating on the bay during break-up in the spring.

The owner of this boat must have gotten a real surprise when he got up this morning! An unexpected snowfall last night brought a soft, fluffy layer of the "white stuff" to cover everything...including the seats, floor and motor of this boat; the sand on the shore and it even sits on the top of the marker seen to the left of the boat. Hopefully, his trailer to haul the boat out and store it for the winter is close by!

Winter comes slowly to Parry Sound

red berries covered in frostI love late fall here in Parry Sound! With the leaves gone from the bushes and trees, it is so much easier to see what those leaves tend to hide - including berries and bulrushes. This picture, taken early in the morning, shows the heavy frost creating a silver frosting over the ground and low-lying plants.

Heavy frost like this is definitely a harbringer of winter...but no matter the season, Parry Sound is a beautiful place to see!
