40 Bay Street Bed & Breakfast had a repeat visitor for several weeks in September - but not the paying kind! A one year old bear cub had been kicked out of the den bu his mother, so he would learn to forage for food on his own; if he didn't find enough, he would still have enough fat on him to hibernate successfully through the winter. Like a lot of youngsters, this "little" bear (I know it's hard to judge by the picture, but this one year old cub is about 5 feet tall, and weighs about 200 pounds) decided to take the easy way out, and forage through our garbage cans for his dinner. As you can see here, he is busy picking his way through the various bags, to ensure he doesn't miss anything good.
Normally, bears aren't found this far into town, and if for some reason they do come down here, when they see people they tend to run away. However, this bear had no fear at all - which was the scary part for those of us in his vicinity....we were never sure what he was going to do! Thankfully, he just disappeared one day, hopefully holed up somewhere warm and cozy for the winter - rather than shot because he was considered dangerous to the public.
